Throughout time, scholars of various Islamic sciences used technical terminologies in their works. Scholars from all four law schools wrote numerous works on legal terminologies and on idioms of their jurists. This book presents a translation of 'Alī b. Muhammad al-Hindi's (d. 1419/1998) Muqaddimat fi bayān al-mustalahāt al-fiqhiyya on Hanbali fiqh terminologies. The work furthermore serves as a Hanbalī biographical dictionary and a historical document which shows how the scholars of different generations determined the 'official' opinions for the Hanbali school. It is hoped the translation, An Overview of Hanbali Terms, Scholars, and Works helps one to understand basic legal terms, and appreciate the immense contributions of the past scholars.
